How Lutron Patio Shades Keep Your Pergola Comfortable at Sunset
Motorized shading for the outdoor rooms of Eastside homes
Outdoor rooms along the Eastside are often designed to make the most of their surroundings, especially when a pergola or covered patio opens toward Lake Washington. Overhead cover keeps the space comfortable when the sun is high, but the experience changes later in the day as lower western light begins reaching beneath the roofline. Reflected glare from the water can reach the dining table just as everyone is settling in.
Motorized exterior shades driven by Lutron manage that exposure while preserving the open character of the space, all through the same control system as your lighting. Keep reading to see how these shades work outdoors and how we plan them into a new home.
Manage the Low Evening Sun Without Losing the View
Overhead structures are most effective against light coming from above. As the sun drops toward the horizon, its lower angle can reach beneath the roofline and across a west-facing patio for hours before sunset. During that stretch, glare can make dining less comfortable and reduce visibility on an outdoor TV positioned toward the western exposure.
When shades come down over the west-facing opening, they cut the direct sun and the reflected glare from the lake, while you keep a softened view of the water. The fabric's openness factor, which is the percentage of the weave that lets light and air through, sets that balance. A tighter weave provides greater glare control and more privacy from neighboring properties, while a more open fabric preserves more of the lake view. Darker fabrics can also improve visibility looking outward, making them especially well-suited to a patio designed around the water.
How Lutron Patio Shades Work Outdoors
Lutron brings exterior shading into its system through Native by Design, a program in which partner manufacturers such as Insolroll build their patio shades around a Lutron drive unit from the start. The quiet Lutron motor sits inside the roller tube, and on headbox models, the fabric rolls up into an aluminum housing when you raise it.
On Oasis models with zipper side tracks, the edges of the fabric lock into a track on each side of the opening. That track keeps the panel more stable in a breeze and closes the side gaps where insects can enter while you're enjoying the patio. Insolroll reports a third-party wind rating of 80 mph for its Oasis 2950 track system, and several models in the line cover openings up to 19 feet wide with a single shade.
Because the drive is Lutron, the shades answer to the same HomeWorks or RadioRA system that runs your home. A keypad near the patio door can lower the west-facing shades and dim the pergola lights in the same scene, making the transition into evening feel effortless.
Planning Exterior Shading Into a New Build
Exterior shading looks best when the pergola or patio cover is designed to receive it. During design, we work with your builder and architect to size the beams so the headbox can recess into the structure, preserving a clean beam line once the shades are raised. Lutron drives run on low-voltage power, so the wiring to each shade is pulled while the framing is open, and blocking for the side tracks goes in at the same stage. An existing pergola can also be retrofitted, though early coordination gives us more flexibility to integrate the hardware discreetly.
Once installed, the shades can follow your Lutron timeclock, with events set relative to sunset so they lower before direct western light reaches the patio. Because those events follow sunset rather than a fixed hour, the timing can adjust as daylight changes throughout the year. When the shades are not needed, the fabric remains rolled neatly inside the headbox and out of view.
Bring Lutron Shading to Your Outdoor Living Space
Lutron exterior shading can extend the hours you spend on a pergola or covered patio by managing late-day glare while preserving the view that makes the space worth gathering in. As a Lutron Black Diamond dealer, Elite Automation plans shading and lighting for outdoor living spaces alongside builders across Seattle and the Eastside, integrating each system into the architecture from the earliest stages of the project.
