Upgrade to Lutron Lighting Control in the Home You Have

Wireless RadioRA 3 controls that work with your existing wiring

Many distinguished homes in Medina and Clyde Hill were completed before whole-home Lutron lighting control became part of the original design. Their architecture may have aged beautifully, but the lighting controls tell a different story: long rows of mismatched switches and an evening routine that still requires moving from room to room.

Modernizing the system can seem difficult when the home includes plaster walls, custom millwork, and finishes chosen to last. Lutron RadioRA 3 offers another path. Its wireless controls use the wall openings already in place, bringing contemporary lighting control into the home while preserving the details that give each room its character. Elite Automation plans every Lutron retrofit for the residence as it stands today. Keep reading to see what that process can look like in your home.

Sunnata Keypads Bring Modern Control to Existing Walls

A RadioRA 3 retrofit centers on Lutron's Sunnata dimmers and keypads, which replace your current switches in the same wallboxes. Each one connects to the electrical circuit already behind its wall plate and communicates with a central processor over Lutron's Clear Connect Type X wireless network. That processor draws power from a single Ethernet cable, so it can sit out of sight in a closet or equipment rack.

Sunnata hybrid keypads combine a dimmer with programmable scene buttons in one device, a combination Lutron describes as ideal for retrofit projects. Because a hybrid keypad fits the single-gang box that holds your existing switch, one discreet control can now manage the lighting for an entire room. A button engraved with the word "Dinner" might bring the dining room chandelier down to a low level while the kitchen pendants settle at half brightness.

Our team reviews every wallbox during the initial walkthrough, including the wiring available at each location, since some Sunnata models require a neutral wire. Establishing those details early lets us specify each control well before installation and approach the finished interiors with a clear plan.

Extend Lutron Control Beyond the Existing Switches

Some of the most useful controls belong in places that never had a switch. Lutron Pico remotes run on a coin battery that can last up to 10 years, and they can mount on the wall beside your Sunnata devices or rest on a tabletop pedestal. A Pico beside the bed can turn off the main-floor lighting once the evening is over, while another at the top of the stairs can illuminate the route to the kitchen before sunrise.

Window treatments join the system through Lutron Sivoia QS Triathlon shades, which also operate on battery power and work directly with RadioRA 3. Homes along Lake Washington often take in strong afternoon glare off the water, so a schedule can lower your west-facing shades each afternoon to protect furniture and artwork. The Lutron app keeps those scenes and schedules close at hand, including when you're away from the residence.

Plan the Retrofit Around the Home You Already Know

A retrofit begins with a conversation about how you use each room. Our designers note where you enter after dark and which spaces you light together, then build keypad layouts and button engraving around those habits. We can also program sunrise and sunset events into the processor's time clock, letting exterior and entry lighting follow the seasons in a region where December sunsets arrive before 4:30 p.m.

If your home already has a RadioRA 2 system from an earlier project, RadioRA 3 offers a direct upgrade. Your existing programming converts to the new processor, and RadioRA 3 remains compatible with most RadioRA 2 devices, so you can replace controls room by room over time. RadioRA 3 also integrates with Control4, bringing lighting and whole-home audio into the same control environment.

Elite Automation's experience with sophisticated retrofit work has also earned recognition from Lutron. The company named Elite Automation the 2025 winner for Best Renovation/Retrofit Project, and you can explore that award-winning project on our site. Elite Automation also holds Lutron Black Diamond status for 2026, the highest tier in Lutron's dealer program.

Bring Refined Lutron Control Into Your Existing Home

RadioRA 3 can introduce scene keypads and battery-powered shading into an established home while preserving the walls, millwork, and finishes already in place. Elite Automation serves homeowners in Medina, Clyde Hill, Bellevue, and Kirkland, bringing a detailed approach to lighting retrofits in some of the area's most distinctive residences.
